The City of Riverside was founded in the early 1870s.  A few years after, the navel orange was planted and found to be such a phenomenal success that full-scale planting started.  Riverside is considered the birthplace of the California citrus industry.

Located in the Inland Empire metropolitan area, Riverside is named for its location beside the Santa Ana River and is also part of the Greater Los Angeles area.
